Ladies and gentlemen – I have a cell phone again!!! It is not as excellent as my former prized possession, but I am growing fonder of it everyday.
Let me introduce you to my new friend, Sam (short for Samsung). Samsung is a lovely open face phone that is black in colour. His screen is quite large, yet his body is quite small (aka it is the perfect phone for my adorable black purse that I purchased in Athens). The keys are packed with symbols of all sorts: the usual numbers, the usual letters and the Arabic letters are the only ones I am familiar with this far. I have also discovered that Sam has a flashlight feature, which is especially useful when navigating around Maadi at night. The potholes are deadly!
I have to say that Sam is not as efficient at texting as my old cell phone was. He is slow to respond to my letter prompts and his T9 vocabulary is limited. I will continue to work with him on this. On the other hand, Sam can speak two languages and I am assuming is he much more fluent a texter in Arabic. I’m just guessing……
The voicemail feature equipped with Samsung is very hilarious. Even if it costs you money, I recommend you call my 10-digit telephone number and listen to the voice recording. I had the choice of four different recordings: Arabic male, Arabic female, English male and English female. I chose English female. And so, with a strong English accent, my voice recording says “Hello, you’ve reached my voice box.” Many of the female teachers have the same voicemail recording and we sometimes call each other for a good laugh :)
I certainly cannot complain about the phone plan I have. In Egypt, it is much cheaper to have a pay as you go plan, which is not what I experienced in Canada! To phone anywhere in Egypt (in the entire country!) it is only 8 cents a minute! Incoming calls of any sort are free of charge and text messaging to anywhere in the WORLD are only 6 cents per message! I can’t complain! :) Oh Sam, give it a few more days and I will like you completely!
