Magdy, Our Driver!

It is simple to find a taxi driver in Maadi. In fact, they find you! They can’t pass you without honking and yelling out the window to recruit you to their service! Those in Peterborough may be thinking, “Yes! Unlimited cabbies!”. Well, no. You have to be selective where I live. Foreigners are recognizable from miles away and because we seem out of place, they try to overcharge you for everything! The school has done their best to recommend us to the services that they trust and when it comes to transportation, our Principal gave us the card of his taxi driver, Magdy.

Magdy is a friendly Egyptian driver with a lovely wife and two daughters. He takes us wherever we need to go in his old, beat up Volkswagon, which is equipped with a luggage rack on top and two rows of seats in the back. Off the rearview mirror hang dirty Disney toys and pieces of plastic food and on the dash sits a big metallic Kleenex box.

Magdy works for himself and has been the creator of his own work uniform: a navy New York City hat, worn backwards, and a long grey ponytail, sometimes braided! He is a larger man with a hearty laugh and tells hilarious jokes on the way to every destination! Even with the wrong emphasis, he still manages to be a better joke teller than I am! Oh Magdy…you ROCK :) With the simple dial of his cell phone number, he is at our front door :)
