There are many things that I miss about home already. I am not talking about minimal missing. I am talking about full-out M.I.S.S.I.N.G. Which makes me wonder…are there certain thresholds for “missing”? I hope not…because I am still on month ONE! Anyways…..here are the things that I miss:
Construction Paper. It is such a staple item (or so I thought). Here – good luck finding any! The Egyptian version of “coloured paper” is slippery and shiny…..completely unrealistic for craft activities. And you can only purchase it in single sheets. It’s a craft nightmare.
Milk. A big glass of 2% milk. Why? Because I have been drinking milk out of a BOX. A box that I grab off the shelf in an UN-refrigerated aisle of the Carrefour. A box that has an expiry date of……NEXT YEAR. I don’t think I have to explain myself anymore.
My hoodies. And blankies. You may laugh, but there is comfort beyond the warmth these fabulous items provide. I am going through warm-clothes-withdrawal (WCW). Not to worry – WCW can be managed. In Egypt you can get medication of all sorts, without a trip to the doctor….
Clean feet. Perhaps my feet weren’t the absolute CLEANEST in Canada, but they were award-winning compared to my Egypt feet. I have to scrub and scrub them, and STILL – they are dirty. AY, AY, AY!
Rain. I can hear Ontario yelling at me. I know, we had rain all summer long. But there is something special about a rainy day. It is an excuse to stay inside, make tea, and watch movies. Here, however, I feel I should be outside all the time. The sun is shining and the guilt gets to me. How can I complain about rain all summer in Canada and then avoid the perfect, reliable sunshine in Egypt? (As a side note – Annie was right. The sun really will come out tomorrow. She must have been speaking in regional terms….)
There must be a “miss” threshold. I can feel it as I reflect on my miss list. YIKES! I better not upset myself before bed! Just quickly, family and friends…..you are implied on my miss list of course. You may also recognize that I have scratched chai tea off the miss list…for now…until someone replenishes Diana’s contribution to my chai tea cause.
Goodnight sweet readers :)
Love Lou xoxo
p.s. TWO more sleeps until SANTORINI!!!
