The Best Lesson of All.

For the past two weeks I have been writing and re-writing….and re-writing….and re-writing……..final exams. Maybe I’m being too picky, but I am really questioning what I want my students to take away from this semester. What material is the most important? What do they need to know for grade 12? What concepts are necessary for university? AY AY AY! My head is in a continual process of thought. Or it was…..until Thursday!

This past Thursday one of my students said to me “Miss Lindsay, I said congratulations to Mohammed for his second place finish at the swim meet.” I acknowledged his words and continued to work at my desk. “Mohammed and I aren’t even friends. In fact, I don’t really get along with him.” Again, I acknowledged his words and continued to work. “Miss Lindsay! I did it because of YOU! You have taught me to be kind to everyone. I would have never congratulated Mohammed before.”

At this point I knew….THIS is what I want my students to take away from this semester. My head is done thinking. My exams are finished. Two weeks left until my first year of teaching is complete!
