I have a rather eccentric student in one of my Grade 12 courses. He is a SUPER person to have in the class…….when he decides to come! I rarely see this boy, as he truthfully admits he just “doesn’t feel like going to school”. Anyways, the way he skips into my classroom and turns lessons into musicals makes him one of my favourites (wait – I don’t have those!).
Yesterday I decided to address the attendance issue with a new approach – SCARF DAYS! It sounds silly, but keep reading. The student is the proud owner of an elaborate scarf collection (full of different colours, patterns, and sizes)……..and I am earning my way to a greater “scarf collection” myself! So, yesterday, after complimenting on his lovely purple scarf (I have a similar one!), I proposed a theme for today: Purple Scarf Day! (In the back of my mind was a brilliant plan). We were both quite excited about the event and I placed an official sticky note in my agenda as a reminder. Well, today, I wasn’t sure whether he would come to class. He usually strives for one out of five classes per week (achieved yesterday). But – HE MADE IT! All decked out with a purple scarf and big smile, the student skipped into my room, singing, “Did you remember?!!!”. How could I forget???!!!
Tomorrow is pink scarf day (well…..more of like a “salmon” he claims).
