Parent-Teacher Interviews

What a night! The usual happened: the parents of the best students showed up, there was a small turn-out for the senior grades, and the evening seemed to go on for quite some time. Let me summarize the “un-usuals” to you:

The business manager at the school showed up to the interviews with a gift for me – two oranges wrapped in saran wrap on a white cafeteria plate. Included with the snack? A massive knife (placed inappropriately at my interview table). It was a “I heard you had chicken pox” gift…..but really…on THIS night?! At THIS event?! My oh my. I stashed the oranges. I sent the knife away.

Parents asking you to give their kids better grades? Normal. Parents asking you to give their kids better grades so that they can get into post-secondary and AVOID military service? Not so normal. How do you handle such a plea? I’m still in shock.

Invitations to go for dinner, to museums, to OTHER cities in Egypt - from multiple families? One would think this was a form of bribery…but these families saw eighties and nineties on the report cards. Genuine kindness….how rare and wonderful.

An order to “make your own signs so parents can identify you”, turned into one colourful sign in the gymnasium (aka Ms. Lindsay’s creation), surrounded by many black and white, typed creations (aka signs of the other teachers). Once again, I am still the girl you said goodbye to in August!

Overall, my first official P/T interview night was a success! There was unlimited tea (YAY!) and many opportunities to give positive feedback about great kids :)

P.S. – I am going away to the Siwa Oasis for the week! It is a field trip with the Grade 11’s…….and we are leaving at 6 a.m.! I think it’s bedtime :) I look forward to posting my adventures next weekend!
