Catching up :)

Another busy week in Cairo. Some highlights for you:

A delightful evening at the Cairo Opera House. Five of us went to see STOMP in our fancy clothes. The opera house was beautiful…and I was able to find Peterborough on the massive world globe inside! As for the show itself – AMAZING. We have rejuvenated the fun of fidgeting. You never can tell what catchy beats you can make with three restless roommates and a flat full of “Egyptian treasures”!

There was a random grand-opening for a new spa on our street. Imagine a road speckled with potholes, garbage, cats and construction……suddenly interrupted with strobe lights, loud music and large blow-up characters. It was weird. Especially on a quick walk home from a dinner party…..that ended due to “stomach” problems. Oh Egypt.

Cancellation of the big math competition in India. You can imagine the disappointment of the students involved in this field trip – they have been counting down the days since September! In other Mumbai-related news, the Oberoi was owned by a family at our school.

My very first camel ride. AHHHHHHH. Never, ever, not even for money, would I ride a camel again. One would dream of such a situation: being on a camel named Snoopy, at the Pyramids in Egypt, taking pictures with Santa hats and super friends……..it seems appealing, but -NO. It was horrifying – both getting on and getting off the smelly creature. I cried on dismount. It was caught on camera.

Dinner and a movie. Ruby Tuesday’s and Nights in Rodante to be specific. Ruby Tuesday’s was DELICIOUS! However, the high rating of the experience had nothing to do with the food. While eating, the Canadian Squash Team came into the restaurant, wearing their matching RED & WHITE team uniforms!!! It was so awesome to feel that automatic Canadian connection. PRICELESS, really. As for the movies……well, let’s just say romantic comedies aren’t so romantic over here. Cut, cut, cut. “Chick flicks” are much shorter in Egypt!

In other exciting news:

Maadi is getting a SUBWAY restaurant! (It may take five years to build…but still, the thought is smile-provoking!). I would love a 6 inch chicken teriyaki on Monterey cheddar right now….

We purchased new toothpaste – “Signal”. It came with a free coupon for an icecream cone at McDonalds. Hmmm…….almost as bad as the cutlery in the yellow tea package.

Tonight we had my favourite meal for dinner - BREAKFAST! Even better – we had my favourite breakfast item – FRENCH TOAST! And even BETTER (I didn’t think it was possible)….Kelly surprised us with french toast in the shape of our initials! (This translates into a level 4+ for creativity and charm). On a BLAH day like today, there is nothing like enjoying a delicious ‘L’…….with Canadian maple syrup!!!

I leave for Prague on Thursday! And, because the moon changed……..we get a longer holiday for Eid! Announced on the weekend (via television), the government has declared Dec. 11 a national holiday! Thank you MOON :)

Tomorrow is December 1st - the day that welcomes my favourite month of the year :)

I think this is everything…for now. Miss you TONS. Love you GALORE. Thinking of you EVERY MOMENT!

Love Lou
